( from here )
Speculate or find oneself reaching for something always out of grasp? The notions are distinctly different, but so easily confused.
[ He could comment on it β on how the last time their paths cross so, wine was dumped against him or the music Venti provided calmed a rage worthy of a dragon. Zhongli is almost nervous to see if his words were truthful, for history does have a habit of repeating itself unless someone intervenes.
The fact cannot be denied: Venti is still on his way, whether his state is favorable or not. Bickering like children would do no good, so Zhongli simply takes his jabs. Gently, with a spear sharp, apparently! Venti deserved some ribbing. ]
That isn't the word I'd use to describe your presence, but that is good to know. The world would miss your songs and the wind's blow.

oh boy slides in here late sorry for the delay!
[ it seems.......the fountain of old man jokes.....never runs dry! they are certainly easier to tell than it is to comment on the second part of zhongli's text which... makes him feel quietly pleased. warmed, somehow. benevolence, in his mind, is worth far less than the simple fact that zhongli would miss his presence ( he's choosing to interpret the statement that way, zhongli is after all still part of this world! ) should he disappear and not for one of his trademark naps. ]
there is something romantic about it, donβt you think? constantly reaching for something just beyond your own fingertips, and even knowing that you will never hold in its entirety, still striving regardless.
no worries at all!
[ Is all he offers at first. While Zhongli may be verbose, Venti has a way that was poetic, quick-witted. Zhongli keeps his composure and logic, but Venti acts so whimsically that it was difficult to keep up. The old man jokes are to be expected, but he still paints a veil upon his intent and insight.
Going to give this stone a damn headache, as he always does.
Zhongli bends only slightly to offer his own truths, unashamed of things that feel sentimental. For many friends have fallen in years, regret often taints his tongue if he is silent. However, romantic? ]
Romantic or cruel? Is it but a matter of perspective?

[ to be frank, to speak ( or text, in this case, of course ) without flourish would be... to rob himself of his own amusement. that, and, it is difficult to change a habit once so well ingrained. it may be a fruitless effort, should he try to contain himself.
besides, dancing around with his words makes him more elusive, and all the more difficult to pin down! he has never been a fan of it, being restricted in any sense. ]
but you know, it could be said that even the cruelty of the situation and the assumed suffering of the one hopelessly giving chase... is also romantic in its own right! numerous poems and stories have given voice to both the sorrow and sweetness of suffering, after all.

[ He sees where Venti is coming from. Where the chase was worthy of the result β the journey worthy of the destination. However, Zhongli sees part of himself that he hates to admit: that many part of his life had been pursuits that lead to nothing. Not simply in a romantic sense with a partner (although... ), but in life's weird weaving.
Zhongli may grow annoyed and disapproving of Venti's drunken antics, where Barbatos had sowed the seeds for this kind of behavior... but he listens to every word. ]
Perhaps I enjoy poems and stories of a different measure.

[ it could be argued that he has been granted more than his share of greatness (... and that he has always shed said greatness like an ill-fitting cape, never entirely grateful for what should be a blessing ) but it has never felt entirely earned. more that it had fallen upon him due to a series of events that had culminated in his ascension. ]
tell me your poetic preferences then, so i might accommodate them as a proper bard should!

[ Is he speaking from experience? Wind and lagging stone, which only had begun to move... an interesting duo, they make. Zhongli has to ask himself if he was being too strict on someone so... whimsical. The thought of wanting, of always being behind β it was an uncomfortable feeling. ]
Ones that have more life to them and less want. Folklore is always a safe assumption. Do you not miss tales of kitsunes and wisps?
